Gondar

The “Camelot of Africa”

Once the royal capital of Ethiopia,  for nearly 250 years (17th — 19th century), Gondar is often called  “the Camelot of Africa” , because its unique ensemble of medieval-style castles, unlike anything else in Africa, evokes the legendary capital of King Arthur’s kingdom in medieval literature — Camelot, a symbol of realm where justice and order prevail. The  city captivates visitors with its  majestic castles, ancient churches, and timeless charm. Within its 900-metre stone walls, the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases an extraordinary collection of 17th-century castles that echo the grandeur of Ethiopia’s imperial past.

Debre Birhan Selassie Church (“Mountain of Light”), is famous for its vivid biblical murals and angel-filled ceiling. Each January, Gondar bursts into color, music and joy during the Timkat Festival, one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular celebrations. Adefa Tours invites you to step back in time and experience the legacy of Ethiopia’s royal era, centered around the unforgettable Citadel of Fasil Ghebi, that stands as the heart of Ethiopia’s royal heritage.
